This little-known vitamin may prevent birth defects, improve quality of life for diabetics, and treat a number of skin conditions.

Functions of Biotin

Biotin, otherwise known as Vitamin H or B7, is a water-soluble vitamin which plays a vital role in metabolizing fats, proteins and carbohydrates. It assists in the growth of hair, skin, nails, sexual organs, blood cells and bone marrow; and at a more basic level, biotin is necessary for gene replication.

Biotin Requirements

True biotin deficiency is very rare, as B7 is fairly bioavailable in foods, and exists in bacteria which live in the human gut. Nutritional sources of biotin include milk, Brewer's yeast, organ meats, soy and egg yolk. Large quantities of egg white, consumed raw, will bind to biotin and prevent it from being absorbed by the body. Signs of biotin deficiency include lack of growth and progressive hair loss, worsening in severe cases to the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes.

Marginal or functional biotin deficiency occasionally occurs in pregnant women, athletes, people with type 2 diabetes and those with alcoholism. Biotin supplements are readily available from supermarkets and health food stores.

Biotin supplements are generally unnecessary unless used for therapeutic purposes; however, the vitamin is considered non-toxic even in high doses, and no serious toxicity due to high consumption has been recorded. Many countries do not recommend a daily intake of the vitamin, as sufficient quantities are generally obtained through diet; however, the United States' AI (Adequate Intake) is set at 30 micrograms a day, while the RDA (Recommended Daily Intake) for supplementation is 300 micrograms a day. Biotin works most effectively in combination with other B vitamins, particularly B5 (pantothenic acid).

Uses of Biotin

Biotin supplements have been used to treat a range of conditions:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis, or 'cradle cap', has been improved by biotin supplements, particularly when the condition occurs as a result of Phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • Type 2 diabetics have successfully used biotin to help stabilise their blood sugar levels.
  • Weak fingernails can be strengthened by taking biotin; supplements marketed for Hair, Skin and Nails typically contain this vitamin.
  • Hair loss can be successfully combated with biotin supplements, both for men and women. B7 may also help to reverse greying hair in those with marginal biotin deficiency. Haircare products containing biotin are unlikely to be effective, as the vitamin is not readily absorbed through the skin. Large quantities of biotin are usually recommended for hair, skin and nail problems—between 1,500 and 2,500 micrograms a day.
  • Low muscle tone and muscle cramps have been attributed to biotin deficiency, due to biotin's role in maintaining the nervous system and converting carbohydrates into energy.

I have been taking bitoin for about 2 months now, which is my second time using this vitamin, mainly for my hair, but it has also aided in nail growth and my skin complexion, and given me more energy. It is amazing the results in such a short period of time. It does take about a month or so to actually notice these results but all the more worth it to keep a daily intake. I take 1 pill of 1000 mcg a day. I believe that vitamins are a key factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and this is definitely one of them!

I am a heavy drinker, and read online that drinking can cause lowered biotin levels. I have been having increasingly severe seborrheic dermatitis, and read that this can be a symptom of low biotin levels, so I thought... worth a try (easier than quitting drinking!). I have been taking 1000 mcg a day for maybe a week and a half, and the results are unmistakable. In particular, areas around my elbows that were getting worse and worse over many months, in spite of assorted topical treatments (including coal tar preparations and prescription triamcinolone acetonide cream) have completely cleared up.

I have been taking 2,000mcg for about three and a half weeks now and my mild/moderate acne has completely cleared up. the middle of the third week is when I started to notice a difference. I usually get 2 or 3 bumps and then as soon as they clear up I get 2 or 3 more. I haven't had anything for a little over a week and my blemishes are finally going away. im ecstatic. i have also been taking msm (another supposed cure all ) i would suggest taking them together.

I've been taking Biotin for almost a year now. I started on a low does for the first 6 months, gradually increasing the dose and now for the last few months I've been taking 2400 mg. My hair grows faster and has also thickened up so much. I also found that my nails grow faster. I recommend this suppliment to anyone who wants to try to grow their hair and make it healthier.

I'm a female and single and work as a customer service assistant and of course with my work i really have to be confident enough to face all the customers asking for assistance. But even though i know how to handle my job, i feel like i'm not confident enough to face them cause of my hair loss. I'm already 28 yrs old and this agony has been with me since i was 15 and i could say that my hair loss really had a great impact in my life. I'm shy to go out, I'm so insecure, I'm less confident with who i am, and i'm desperate. I look younger than my age if, you'll notice my face first but if you'll notice my hair first than my face you'll think that i'm too old. I don't even know why i'm sharing my story here but i guess it's because i feel like maybe this is the answer to my problem. I used those hair growers in the market, it did work but then after a month its getting thinner again, and there my scalp is visible again it's like something is lucking. I had been searching in the net, books, mags but this is different i never heard about biotin. I really hope this would help me. I really find this article very helpful. Thank you so much.

I hope it works for you! You'll need to take biotin for a while - three months, IIRC - before you can see if it's helping. You may have already done this, but have you had your thyroid checked out?

I am a testimonial to benefits of Biotin. This article reinforces the benefits that I have experienced. Especially hair growth and to reverse greying. I'm 56 and instead of growing older looking I'm growing younger looking. Biotin is great!!!

I have cronic nails, always have. They layer and split in the middle of the nail then rip towards the sides 9 out of 10 times taking skin with them. VERY SORE. This is regular. My hair growth has always been poor aswell and very thin. Not hereditary I know as my sister and brother dont have any hair or nail problems. Infact quite the opp, mum and sisters hair grows like mad. Anyway wents docs and they took a nail sample??! Doc tells me he reckons its a fungal infection?? Mmmm, after looking on internet I think I have diagnosed my problem myself. Brittle nail syndrome. My nails look just like that, but worse. Thats where I read about Biotin. Been taking nearly a month, my nails havent split yet, but not growing amazingly fast, so I will wait 2-3 months and see. Will post back on results. Not sure the dosage as I cant make out on bottle it says 300 and what looks like an back to front y and then g. These were from H&B and they reckon dosage is ok. Take religiously every morning, would love to have 'normal' nails without ripped skin and swollen bleeding fingers, and if my hair perks up a bit then thats a bonus. Havent had a haircut for about 2yrs, Iam a qualified hairdresser. It doesnt grow and I cant afford to lose what little I have already, and being qualified I know all the dos and donts and all the guff/duff 'supergrow' shampoos and all that rubbish. So wish me luck. :)
